Kannon Boddhisatva, the god of compassion

Japan
Momoyama Period
Wood, covered with gold leaf
Height: 61 cm
Ex: Japan

Kannon Boddhisatva is the god of compassion in Buddhism.
Together with Seishi Boddhisatva he often stands in a triad next to Amida Buddha. Kannon Boddhisatva is considered as the active emanation of Amida Buddha. In his left hand he holds a vase for lotus lowers, symbol of purity. His right hand is extended in varada mudra. His dhoti is beautifully draped around the body. He wears an elaborated crown, made of engraved, gilded copper.
The face is showing a serene expression of deep meditation.
The sculpture is based on its original double lotus, and shows a black patina from the fumes of incense at the temple.
